BRYKK Help

Can't join a BRYKK family?

BRYKK uses Apple's iCloud to keep your family in sync, with limited relay services for faster safety delivery. If you can't join a family, the cause is almost always one of these five things. Work through them in order.

STEP 1

Double-check the family code

Family codes are 6 characters. The most common typos:

  • capital O vs the number 0
  • capital I vs the number 1
  • capital S vs the number 5

Easiest fix: ask the person who invited you to text or AirDrop the code so you can copy and paste instead of typing it.

STEP 2

Make sure you're signed into iCloud

BRYKK won't work without iCloud. Check on the phone with the issue:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap your name at the very top
  3. Make sure you're signed in (you'll see your Apple ID email)
  4. Tap iCloud → make sure iCloud Drive is ON
  5. Scroll to Apps Using iCloud → make sure BRYKK is enabled
STEP 3

Check Screen Time / parental controls

Some Screen Time settings on a kid or teen Apple ID can block iCloud — even when texts and calls work fine. On the phone with the issue:

  1. Settings → Screen Time
  2. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions
  3. Tap Content RestrictionsWeb Content
  4. Set Web Content to Unrestricted (you can experiment with tightening it later, after BRYKK is set up)
Quick test: if you're not sure which setting is the culprit, temporarily toggle Content & Privacy Restrictions OFF entirely, try BRYKK again, then turn restrictions back on. If it works with restrictions off, the parental control settings are the issue.
STEP 4

Check for parental control apps

If you have a third-party parental control app installed — common ones include Bark, Qustodio, Disney Circle, Aura, Net Nanny, Norton Family, Mobicip, OurPact— it likely installed a configuration profile that intercepts all internet traffic. Some of these block iCloud's data servers without warning, even though they let texts, FaceTime, and calls through.

To check what's installed:

  1. Settings → General → VPN & Device Management
  2. Look for any Configuration Profile or VPN entry
  3. If you see one, that's likely the cause

Two paths from here:

  • Allowlist iCloud in your parental control app. Most apps let you allow specific domains. Add *.icloud.com, *.apple-cloudkit.com, and *.icloud-content.com.
  • Temporarily remove the profile while joining BRYKK, then re-enable it after the family is connected.
STEP 5

Check Low Data Mode and your network

iOS Low Data Mode quietly blocks BRYKK from reaching iCloud. Check both Wi-Fi and cellular:

  • Settings → Wi-Fi → tap (i) next to your network → turn off Low Data Mode
  • Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Options → turn off Low Data Mode
  • Settings → Cellular → scroll to BRYKK → make sure cellular is enabled

Custom DNS settings (Cloudflare Family 1.1.1.3, OpenDNS Family Shield, NextDNS, AdGuard Family) can also filter Apple endpoints. If your phone or router uses family-friendly DNS, try a different network as a test.

And if you're somewhere with weak signal — basement, parking garage, building edge — step outside and try again.

Still stuck?

Email us at hello@brykk.app and tell us:

  • iPhone model and iOS version
  • Whether the phone has Screen Time turned on
  • Whether any parental control app is installed (Bark, Qustodio, etc.)
  • What error message BRYKK shows when you try to join

The more detail you can give us, the faster we can get you connected.
